Welcome! (Overview)

Hi,

Welcome to the Kaizen/Kaikaku Life! This blog was created for businesses and human beings that are trying to improve their life. Periodically, I will be posting tools that I have learned through the years in the Industrial Engineering and Facility Management fields that have changed companies and people’s lives for the better.
Engineering is not something that is limited to buildings and processes because any inanimate or organic thing must be designed! Every decision one makes in life or in business helps engineer their success or failure.

To start off with, here are a couple terms that are key to this blog:

1. Kaizen - The Japanese word that can be translated in English to mean Continuous Improvement in all stages of the life cycle. These are small incremental improvement changes everyday that lead to Kaikaku.
A breakdown of the word yields Kai (change) to become good (zen).

2. Kaikaku - Revolutionary change. Where kaizen is generally evolutionary in nature, kaikaku requires radical shifts in thinking. Translation: Kai (change) Kaku (radical).

3. Genba - Literally means "Real Place" or "where the action takes place." In Industrial Engineering we define it as a place where value is added. Basically, we would like everything in a factory or business to be Genba (value adding process or location). If it’s not it is considered "Muda"

4. Muda - Another Japanese words that translates to "wasteful activity" Muda = Waste. In process management we want to avoid "Muda" like we avoid variation (Mura). .

5. Muri - When people and machines are pushed beyond a reasonable limit, they tend to have diminishing performance, as well as increased costs.

6. Bushido - Is the code that the Samurai lived by and it consists of seven virtues: Justice, Bravery, Benevolence, Politeness, Veracity, Honor, and Loyalty. The Kanji symbol in the title means Bushido.

I will be throwing around these terms and others during the course of this blog, along with posting many helpful essays in Business that I have written as an M.S. Industrial Engineering Student. Some of the techniques you will learn have helped businesses increase their bottom line by over 500%, given people the power to get off and stay off drugs, eliminate the hurtful relationships cycle, and enjoy an overall increase in both physical and spiritual energy. Stay tuned and again welcome!!

  2. Hi, I have finished reading the why article and the rest. You have been extremely helpful in my studies at the university in Japan. The TPM helped me with my exam. I too will become an Industrial Engineer.
